Give Way Rules
- 1/20When any other vehicle is approaching or crossing an intersection, you should not
Speed up.: It is important to use the system of car control to help you deal with hazards safely when approaching an intersection.
At intersections, road users must stop or give way as necessary at stop signs, give way signs, and
Traffic signals.: Compliance with these traffic controls is essential for safe navigation through intersections.
If you are turning at an intersection, you must give way to vehicles that are
Not turning.: This rule applies even if you are leaving the path of a marked centre line, as you are then considered to be turning.
If you are turning right at an intersection, you must give way to all vehicles coming towards you, including those
Turning left.: This rule is applicable if both vehicles are facing no signs or signals, or are facing the same signs or signals.
At a T-intersection or driveway, traffic on a terminating road or driveway (the bottom of the T) must give way to all traffic on a
Continuing road (top of the T).: Vehicles entering a continuing road from a terminating road or driveway must yield to traffic already on the continuing road.
In all other situations at an intersection, you must give way to all vehicles coming from your
Right.: This applies, for example, at a roundabout or at a crossroad where traffic signals have failed and all approaches have flashing yellow lights.
When two vehicles are coming towards each other and both are turning right, normally no one should have to give way because they won’t
Cross each other’s path.: This allows both vehicles to turn safely, but drivers should be careful with large trucks or buses that may need more room.
When two vehicles are turning right towards each other, you should remember to check for traffic coming towards you that’s going straight through the intersection, as your view might be
Blocked by the turning vehicle.: It is important to be aware of potential obscured views due to other turning vehicles.
At an intersection controlled by a stop sign, your vehicle must
Come to a complete stop.: You must not just slow down; a full stop is required at a stop sign.
If you’re on a terminating road (bottom of the T), you must give way to traffic on the
Continuing road (top of the T).: Traffic on a road that ends at a T-intersection must yield to traffic on the through road
At a single-laned roundabout, you must give way to all vehicles that will cross your path from your
Right.: This rule applies as you enter the roundabout.
Most multi-laned roundabouts are marked with lanes and arrows that tell you
Which lane to use.: It is important to pay close attention to these markings as not all multi-laned roundabouts are the same.
When coming up to a multi-laned roundabout, besides slowing down and being prepared to give way, you must also be in the
Correct lane for where you want to go.: Proper lane selection is essential for navigating multi-laned roundabouts safely and efficiently.
If you’re turning left at the first exit of a roundabout, you should signal left as you come up to the
Roundabout.: Proper signaling helps other drivers anticipate your intentions.
At an intersection controlled by traffic signals, a red signal always means you must
Stop.: This is a universal rule for traffic signals.
A green signal means you can go, provided it’s safe, and if you’re turning right, you must give way to vehicles coming towards you that are going straight through or vehicles
Turning left.: You also must give way to pedestrians crossing.
If you encounter a flashing yellow traffic signal, it means the traffic signals are not working, and you must
Apply the give way rules.: In this situation, the intersection reverts to uncontrolled give way principles.
When red arrows are displayed on traffic signals, you must stop if you’re travelling in the
Direction the arrow is pointing.: Arrow traffic signals specifically control traffic flow for the indicated direction.
If you are waiting at a stop sign and another car is turning across in front of you, that car has priority, even though it is
Turning.: Your presence at a stop sign means the other vehicle has priority.
You are not permitted to queue across an intersection if there is a
Yellow hatched box painted on the road.: Blocking an intersection is prohibited and can cause significant delays and danger to other traffic.
